Disclaimer : This movie is rated NC16 for some mature content.

For this Christmas, gather your friends to watch the latest romantic comedy Christmas movie, entitled “Last Christmas”, starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. This movie is inspired by the hit Christmas song “Last Christmas” written by George Michael and sang by Wham!. Directed by Paul Feig and written by Bryony Kimmings and Emma Thompson, this heartwarming movie can help you do some self-healing in the process. Alright, let’s get down to the movie review.

Storyline

Kate (Emilia Clarke) was a great singer since young and she aspired to be a singer one day. However, she was unsuccessful in every singing audition. She also had issues with her Yugoslavian family, mainly her mother (Emma Thompson) and her sister (Lydia Leonard) whom she resents and refused to go back to her parents’ house. As part of her day job, she worked as an elf in a Christmas shop, under her boss (Michelle Yeoh) who was referred to as “Santa”. Just then, a series of unfortunate events happened to her. From being kicked out by her flatmates after several mishaps to a break-in at the Christmas shop, nothing seemed to go right for Kate and her life was in a mess.

Then, came Tom Webster (Henry Golding) whom she discovered during her work. The first meet didn’t turn out well as she gt bird shit on her eye. Ouch! 😦 However, it did not end there as they bumped into each other several times after the first meeting. Each time they met, Tom will bring Kate around to explore and have fun. As time progressed, Kate was attracted to Tom as she began to open up to Tom whom he later discovered a huge secret about Kate that changed her life ever since. What was this huge secret and how will Kate and Tom turned out in the end? Find out the answer when you go watch the movie this holiday season.

Overall, the storyline has a huge plot twist which has totally caught me off guard. For those who pay attention to details, you can gather some hints about the plot twist through the interactions between Kate and Tom. As mentioned earlier, this is a romantic comedy (rom-com) movie and it did provide me with some good laughs throughout the movie. There was a good balance of romance and comedy in this movie which makes this movie so nice to watch and it has that feel-good feeling after watching the movie. The movie also addressed important social issues such as depression and same-gender relationships. My only concern with the movie that I did not have enough time to register the plot twist in my head and therefore, the plot twist did not hit me hard enough.

Character Development

From being hated to being loved by everyone, there was a lot of self-healing that Kate had to went through and all these would not have been possible without Tom’s help.  Kate also volunteered at a home shelter which she initially mocked Tom about, but later on, she began to offer her assistance to those living in the streets. This brings about the spirit of giving and through this process, Kate began to make improvements to her life and not throw her precious life away anymore. Through her kind actions, she brought happiness to her family and her friends which in turn, began to forgive Kate for her wrongdoings. It warmed my heart every time she managed to resolve her issue and finally, in the end, everyone could get together to celebrate Christmas in the home shelter, all thanks to Kate.

Memorable Scene

My personal favorite scene in this feel-good movie would be Kate’s performance at the Christmas show in the home shelter where she sang the song “Last Christmas”. Each line of the lyrics represents a special moment in the movie which sums up perfectly for the entire movie. Even though I believed most of the audiences would prefer an alternate ending, this ending gives audiences the bittersweet feeling which makes this a very unique Christmas movie.

Movie Rating: 7.5/10 (Heartwarming Rom-Com movie with a good balance of comedy and romance. A fantastic storyline that addressed several important issues such as mental health and graciousness. However, the huge plot twist did not hit me hard enough.)

Movie duration: 1 Hr 43 mins
