For those viewers out who like monsters and mythical creatures, I have a movie that you would definitely enjoy, which is titled “Godzilla 2”.
Storyline
In case you have not watched the previous movie “Godzilla” or have no idea what this mythical creature is, allow me to provide a brief introduction to Godzilla. This whole movie sequel revolves around this radioactive dinosaurian creature named “Godzilla”, which originated from Japan. It has many notable fights against monsters, one of which is the world-famous King Kong. I believed in many previous movie sequels about Godzilla, King Kong is the only monster which Godzilla hasn’t defeated till this date. However, it is still regarded as the King of Monsters.
Alright, now back to this movie. This time, it’s the most fearsome monster Godzilla against one of its arch-enemy: King Ghidorah (Golden dragon with three heads, no arms, and giant wings). This whole battle began from a wrong move made by Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), which awoken and released King Ghidorah. Now, they had to fight to be crowned as the king of the monsters. So which monster prevailed? That’s for you to find out when you go watch the movie.
Overall, I feel that the storyline is pretty bad and could be prevented altogether if Dr. Emma Russell did more research about the monster that she was dealing with. This movie seemed like a redemption movie for her stupid actions that started the whole fight between Godzilla and King Ghidorah. It was never a logical decision to release a ferocious monster and that she staged the release of King Ghidorah made her looked like a villain. Humans made several silly mistakes and Godzilla was the hero to save the day. While this movie made Godzilla truly the king of the monsters, I feel that the battle could have initiated in a much better way, probably getting Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) to be the true villain who had the idea of releasing King Ghidorah himself for the purpose of getting something out from the government.
Character Development
This movie is definitely bigger and better than the previous Godzilla movie as it does not only features Godzilla and King Ghidorah, but also other iconic monsters such as Mothra at the beginning of the movie and Rodan which is King Ghidorah ally. They were important in the build-up of this epic fight. While Godzilla remained as the main character of this entire movie, there was also a fair share of emphasis on the other characters that made this whole movie interesting to watch and not just Godzilla fighting all the time.
The human characters in this movie also play a big part in this movie, especially Dr. Emma and Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) as one began the fight between the two formidable monsters while one made an important contribution to the final battle. In general, the director did a great job of ensuring that the human characters were able to fit in well in this movie which was dominated mostly by the monsters.
Special effects
In terms of the CGI, it was probably one of the best so far as compared to the other previous Godzilla movies. Duh, of course. *Rolling eyes* There were so many monsters in this movie that at one point, I thought that the other monsters would not look as nice as Godzilla. Turned out I was wrong as the other monsters looked as stunning as they could have been. From the skin texture to the body movements of these monsters, the team’s attention to detail has made the monsters looked very natural as if they really exist.
The CGI team has also made the environment looks as realistic as possible and I didn’t expect the resting place of Godzilla to look so majestic and perfectly intact. My only concern in this movie was how the human characters were able to drive their vehicle around with ease during the final battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah when the buildings were literally destroyed? It would make sense if they kept the distance short and ran to safety using the helicopter.
Memorable Scene
My favorite scene in this movie would be the scene where Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) sacrifices himself by manually detonating a device, which revived Godzilla and increased its power. Yes, Godzilla actually died in this movie. Want to know what happens? Go and catch the movie to find out.
Anyway, this scene was probably the most touching and important in this movie. Without his sacrifice, Godzilla will not be brought back to life and King Ghidorah would have taken over the world.
Overall Movie Rating: 6 / 10 ( The initial reason as to how the fight started was super weak and can be prevented. This time around, I feel Dr. Emma Russell was the true villain as she thought she was saving the earth but unfortunately, she was wrong. Thankfully, the stunning special effects and battle fight made up for the poor storyline.)
Movie duration: 2 hrs 12 mins
